Instructional Review of the Fire Officer One Curriculum - 6 hours

This course will review the major topic issues of the Fire Officer I sequence of courses, focusing on preparation of students for the changing State certification exam. Adult education methodologies needed to help students retain key concepts will be emphasized, with a focus on test preparation techniques, memory aides, and student learning styles. Material will be drawn from the Building Construction, Tactics, Protection Systems, Fire Inspection, Company Officer Leadership and Active Training references from the Florida State Fire College Curriculum. Participants will review the current state designated textbooks and curriculum for each portion of the Fire Officer I as specified by FAC 69A-37.


Instructional Review of the Fire Inspector One Curriculum - 5 hours

This course will review the major topic issues of the Fire Inspector I sequence of courses, focusing on preparation of students for the changing State certification exam. Adult education methodologies needed to help students retain key concepts will be emphasized, with a focus on test preparation techniques, memory aides, and student learning styles. Material will be drawn from the Fire Inspection & Code Enforcement, Private Fire Protection Systems, Building Construction, Codes & Standards and Plan Review references from the Florida State Fire College Curriculum. Participants will review the current state designated textbooks and curriculum for each portion of the Fire Inspector I as specified by FAC 69A-39.


Instructional Review of the Fire Investigator One Curriculum - 5 hours

This course will review the major topic issues of the Fire Investigator I sequence of courses, focusing on preparation of students for the State certification exam. Adult education methodologies needed to help students retain key concepts will be emphasized, with a focus on test preparation techniques, memory aides, and student learning styles. Material will be drawn from the Fire Chemistry, Fire Cause & Origin, Private Fire Protection Systems and Building Construction references from the Florida State Fire College Curriculum. Participants will review the current state designated textbooks and curriculum for each portion of the Fire Investigator I as specified by FAC 69A-37.


2004 Florida Fire Prevention Code Review - 6 hours

(State Fire Marshal Approval # RN2956)

This course will review all sections of the Florida Fire Prevention Code, 2004 Edition. Focus will be made on use of the index and table of contents of NFPA 1 and 101 to find information. Emphasis will be made on Chapter 7, Means of Egress, of NFPA 101 as a location to find answers to common exit related code questions. The Broward County Amendments (Effective January 1st, 2005) will also be reviewed for application within Broward. Sections of Chapter 633 dealing with licensing and permitting of fire protection contractors will be discussed, as well as the Uniform Standards and other regulations contained within Florida Administrative Code 69A.


Company Officer - 40 Hours (Part of Fire Officer 1)

Designed to assist fire officers in solving the varied problems and situations they will be required to manage effectively in today's ever-changing fire service. This course covers the principles of effective curriculum design. It stresses the principles of adult learning and student-centered learning. Designing courses and units that address learning, performance, and behavioral objectives is the program goal.


Basic Incident Management Systems - 16 Hours (Part of Fire Officer 1)

In this course, the student must demonstrate knowledge of the principles and features of an incident command system, how an incident command system is organized, incident facilities and their purposes (such as but not limited to command post, staging area, bases, camps, and heliports-helispots), incident resources such as strike teams, task forces, and single resources, and common responsibilities, such as communications and forms, in incident management.


Intermediate Incident Management Systems - 24 Hours (Part of Fire Officer 1)

In this course, the student must be able to list and describe the duties of various positions within the incident command system, construct an incident management organization for a given incident or event, including appropriate procedures for establishing command, transferring command, and terminating an incident, demonstrate knowledge of efficient incident resource management including logistics, finance, administration, and record-keeping, demonstrate a familiarity with air operations, and demonstrate knowledge of incident planning processes.


Fire Prevention Practices - 40 Hours (Part of Fire Officer 1, Fire Inspector 1)

A study of fire inspection practices, including such items as purpose; definition; Fire Prevention Bureau activities; hazards; fire behavior; fire causes; types of construction including structural features, flame spread, occupancy and fireload; inspection techniques; conducting inspections.


Private Fire Protection Systems I - 40 Hours (Part of Fire Officer 1, Fire Inspector 1 and Fire Investigator 1)

This is a study of private fire protection and detection systems, such as sprinkler and standpipe systems, chemical extinguishing systems, detection systems and devices. Each system is discussed as to its need, construction, preventive maintenance and individual uses.


Building Construction - 40 Hours (Part of Fire Officer 1, Fire Inspector 1 and Fire Investigator 1)

This course involves the study of building construction as it relates to the fire service. Topics include identifying hazards from assault by fire and gravity, how building construction can influence fire spread, fire confinement or structural collapse, and many other life safety issues. This is not a building course per se, but rather a course to identify construction features and their hazards under fire conditions.


Construction Documents and Plan Review - 40 Hours (Part of Fire Inspector 1)

This course is geared toward teaching the student how to assimilate information contained in working, drawing and specifications as they relate to the fire inspector. The curriculum includes how to interpret conventional graphic communications. Accepted standards and conventions are introduced. Symbols, abbreviations, principles of technical projection, as well as, a review of construction arithmetic and geometry, are included.


Fire Codes and Standards - 40 Hours (Part of Fire Inspector 1)
